Remsburg CleanUp 2012

Whew! This year for Christmas, we gave Grandma Phyllis an entire day devoted to cleaning her basement. Kelly & Jeff couldn’t make it, but me, Holly, Kim and Jenny showed up to clean up what looked like 50 years worth of stuff.

We worked hard. And all day long. Starting at about 9:00 and ending at about 4:00. It was a long day – bringing everything to donate and throw away from downstairs. We did the basement, the canning room, the storage room, the guest room & all its closets and dressers, the Christmas closet and Grandma’s closet. Grandma likes to store things everywhere. The modern day woman would be appalled. She also likes greenery. SOOO much greenery. Jenny kept walking around the house trying to get Grandma to throw out the greenery.

Some special memories:

  • I wore the sweater because, as Jenny says, that joke just NEVER GETS OLD.
  • Made mention of the Red Lobster story, which prompted Jenny to swear in front of my dad, who wouldn’t have noticed except I pointed it out.
  • The bunnies. The weird bunnies.
  • Dead mouse.
  • Sweeping, dusting, cleaning and rearranging
  • Dad kept saying that “this might be worth something!” when we went to throw things out.
  • Old family pictures that we actually took the time to stop and look at, including the beauty of my parents below.
  • SO MUCH LAUGHING.
  • Grandma being afraid we would poison her at lunch when we staked our claims on the crocks.

We did each get a couple of treasures. I got a crock, a blue ball jar, a mini-donut maker (which I used today) and a meat mallet! But, not to be too cheesy, the best thing I got was an entire day with my cousins/best friends and my grandma. My dear Grandma, who we thought would never throw anything away and let everything go without so much as a fight. I also got a beautiful thank you note which I know that I will always cherish =)

Here’s to next year and finding out what is in all those kitchen cupboards!!
